This estate was created at the end of the 18th century by Albert Reynaud (the vines were planted in the early 1920s), who did not hesitate to deviate from the practices usually observed in Châteauneuf du Pape. Indeed, in a region traditionally roasted by the sun's rays in summer, a part of the vineyard faces north, and the vines benefit from the refreshing virtues of the small pine forests that dot the estate. Louis Reynaud, Albert's son, mainly focused on a single grape variety, Grenache, where the appellation authorizes thirteen; it was also he who decided to start bottling the production on the estate and who acquired Château des Tours at the end of the 1930s, which he would entrust to his son Bernard. Later, in 1945, he also acquired Château de Fonsalette. In 1978, Jacques Reynaud, Bernard's brother, took over the management of Châteaux Rayas and Fonsalette. Finally, the current owner, Emmanuel Reynaud, who is none other than Jacques' nephew and who had already been operating Château des Tours in the Sarrians heights since 1989, succeeded him in 1997 at the head of Rayas and Fonsalette. Emmanuel Reynaud himself has six children, three of whom work in his properties.\u003cbr style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\"\u003e\u003cbr style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\"\u003eChâteau Rayas extends over 12 hectares surrounded by forests and has a very particular terroir, with particularly poor and sandy soils that give great finesse to the wines, whereas the appellation's soils are mainly composed of clays and pebbles; a north exposure that allows the wines to retain freshness and to be harvested much later than in the rest of the appellation. The grape varieties consist of Grenache for the red and Grenache and Clairette for the white. The vineyard is worked like a garden, the soils are tilled so that the grass does not compete with the vine for water. Yields are absolutely tiny, around 7.5 hectoliters per hectare.\u003cbr style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\"\u003e\u003cbr style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px;\"\u003eAs for winemaking, it is described as low-interventionist, with a desire to stay as close as possible to the fruit; fermentations are done with whole clusters and the grapes are trodden; the barrels are very old so as not to mark the wine.
